So even Ron Paul isn’t a ‘real Conservative’ now? Perhaps the reason that no serious candidate agrees on all your issues is that it’s impossible for an intellectually serious person to come up with a consistent philosophy that does so.
So instead the party turns to “Conservatives” like Rep. Hunter, populists with no coherent philosphy other than how to appeal to emotion by wrapping themselves in the Bible and Flag. And while you eat it up, you hand over control of every detail of your lives to them.
No, Ron Paul is not and never was a “real Conservative.” He’s a Libertarian, which makes him part Conservative, part Liberal and part nut. Duncan Hunter, on the other hand, is a solid Conservative who has been extremely consistent in his positions since he was elected in 1980.
“If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals–if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.” — Ronald Reagan
Of course, Reagan would probably not be considered a ‘real Conservative’ in today’s party. All that counts any more is Southern populists (like Duncan Hunter) and the party has sold out every principle it once stood for to please them.
