Mexican ID Cards Gain Support
This is just plain wrong:
The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday voted to support a Bush administration plan to allow the use of Mexican identification cards to open U.S. bank accounts.
The House voted 222 to 177 remove language in an $89.9 billion bill funding the Transportation and Treasury Departments aimed at preventing the use of the cards. The House has yet to vote on the overall bill.
These “matricula consular” cards will allow immigrants that lack any US ID to open bank accounts so they can wire money back home without “expensive wire-transfer fees”.
Wouldn’t it be easy to issue these people a picture ID with their green card? And if they don’t have a green card, aren’t they criminals?
Mexican officials insist the identification is safe. It was revamped in March of 2002 to include more safety features, which make it hard to forge.
They also say that applicants are screened by specially trained consular officers and the feeder documents proving Mexican nationality are checked with databases in Mexico.
Yes, and isn’t it nice to know that ID cards that allow people to move about our nation freely — including getting on planes — are being issued by one of the most corrupt bureaucracy on the planet?
