Liberals and Quality Lies

Jonah at The Corner notes a post from popular lefty Matt Yglesias in which he berates liberal politicians for not lying consistently and convincingly when they pretend to support an issue when their position is, in fact, completely the opposite:

I’ve heard a shockingly large number of politicians say things, in rooms where journalists are present, that make it perfectly clear that they think gay marriage is just fine but that the voters aren’t ready for it. That’s a sensible thing to believe, but you can’t go around saying it if you’re trying to win votes. If you’re going to lie, then lie – and lie convincingly!

Yes, the Party of Immorality goes into paroxysms of righteous outrage when a conservative is caught in a lie, yet feels perfectly justified in engaging in “whatever it takes” tactics to advance their agenda, including outright lying. Which explains why conservatives came out in droves to denounce Randy “Duke” Cunningham, and liberals staunchly defended a president and commander-in-chief that committed purjury under oath.

Yet taking a look through the comments to Matt’s post is like looking into the mind of a man who will say anything to get elected. One reader says to avoid the issue (“No lie, no foul”). Another reader, Ovid, complains:

We don’t have to look far to see where the Dems have gotten their reputation for waffling and flip-flopping. Just look at the statement, “I believe marriage is between a man and a woman.”

Why not simply say, “I oppose gay marriage”? Doesn’t it come to the same thing? It’s hard to talk plain English, though, when you’re saying something you don’t really believe. It makes the lie all the more uncomfortable.

I heartedly agree, only I would have written it this way:

Just look at the statement, “I believe that women have the right to choose.”

Why not simply say, “I support murdering viable babies”? Doesn’t it come to the same thing?

And I love the hypocrisy of of Matt in NYC’s comment:

This is exactly where this debate has to go. It seems so obvious to me that everyone who is opposed to gay marriage is either — take your pick — a bigot, a homophobe or just plain twisted. Why do Americans have such a hard time with the truth? In Western Europe, the minority of the population who oppose equal rights for gay people at least have the decency to admit that they are hate-filled homophobes.

Yep, it’s obvious that those on the otherside are hate-filled, twisted bigots, so it perfectly all right to hate them. Just what one would expect from the self-proclaimed Party of Tolerance.

Oh, and by the way “Matt from NYC”, just how many countries in Western Europe have legalized gay marriage? Only three, I believe: the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain.

And if this is such an important issue, why aren’t liberals, and particularly homosexuals, passionately supporting the Global War on Islamofacism as we battle an ideology that seeks to establish a caliphate which would impose a social and legal structure under which homosexuals would be stoned to death upon discovery? Perhaps it is because the gay issue is only useful to beat up conservatives and brand Christians as “hate-filled bigots”.

In the meantime, lie and lie convincingly to get into office and advance the liberal agenda

It’s a lot like the culture of corruption in our own local politics. Almost all the politicians/elected officials have been taking money from criminals, and the county mayor had one on his staff before he had to fire him. Then he hired him back as his personal fund raiser. The lies are just a small part of a bigger problem which is a lack of ethics, or situational ethics. This permeates our society today and is manifesting itself in things like the Tennessee Waltz, Garage Gate and now both the Republican and Democrat candidates for Sheriff saying it is ok to take money from convicts. The voters are the only ones who have the power to stop this “lapse” in ethics. They must choose to elect people who will do the “right” thing – all the time.
