Legacy
“You don`t hear anyone saying “I`m a Clinton Democrat, the way Republicans fight for the mantle of being known as ‘Reagan Republicans,’” Luntz said. “And Gore is a footnote. Gore will be forgotten. He left no footprints on the American psyche.”

Interestingly, one of the major points of the article was that the “Clinton legacy” was one of centrism. That is, he was more like a Republican.
New Democrats, the author says, are veering toward the left.
Maybe I’m missing something, but it seems odd that a righty like yourself would be cheering this move away from the center.
Or is this post just another petty strike against “the enemy”?
Why would I cheer a move towards reasonableness on the part of liberals when the fact that they are lurching left (yes — away from Clinton centrism) will ensure their defeat in the coming election cycle at both the executive and legislative levels?
Ok. So it is pretty much just a petty strike against the enemy.
You admit, then, that your interest in politics is less about the validity of your position then it is about the total elimination of those who think differently from you?
My point is that if you really believe that conservative ideology is “reasonable,” or that it will lead to a better society then you *would* welcome the fact that the other side is starting to see things your way, because what you’re ultimately interested in is a better society.
But, as I said, that doesn’t seem to be your focus.
Now, I happen to believe that liberal policies are better for the nation (and humanity) in the long run. I believe in extending equality as broadly as possible, in protecting the weak, and in being responsible in the ways we treat our environment. I believe a reduction in short-term profits is worth long-term benefits.
You happen to disagree. Maybe you have other ideas on what would be best. Or maybe you’ve embraced a self-serving philosophy that can’t stand up to intellectual rigor. In which case, I could understand why you’d rather see your political opponents disappear altogether.
Democracy is about compromise, about struggling to find middle ground between competing philosophies. For you to suggest that the other side deserves no representation in our government is disturbing, dangerous, and anti-democratic.
