Is SAFE Really Safe?

I have fought federal involvement in firearm carry because there isn’t anything that the federal government hasn’t screwed up once it gets its hooks into that facet of your life. My favorite defender of self-defense organization is trumpeting SAFE — Secure Access to Firearms Enhancement. In reality, it is a requirement that every state recognize the carry permit of every other state. It’s like a drivers license — once you have one, you can drive in every state but have to obey that state’s laws.

The text of the SAFE act is innocuous enough:

Notwithstanding any provision of the law of any State or political subdivision thereof, a person who is not prohibited by Federal law from possessing, transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm, and is–

  1. carrying a valid license or permit which is issued pursuant to the law of any State and which permits the person to carry a concealed firearm; or
  2. otherwise entitled to carry a concealed firearm in and pursuant to the law of the State of the person’s residence,

may carry in any State a concealed firearm in accordance with the terms of the license or with the laws of the State of the person’s residence, subject to the laws of the State in which the firearm is carried concerning specific types of locations in which firearms may not be carried.

The bill currently has 68 cosponsors. Can anyone think of any reason that I shouldn’t write my congresswoman and tell her to sign on?

  1. Reason to oppose:
As soon as you make carry permits a national issue, you’ve opened the door for national standards on elligibility for said permits. This could be a diaster for people in ‘shall issue’ states as people like Fienstein would now be in a position to force them back to ‘may issue’ systems like CA and NJ.
