Iraqi Bravery

The first meeting of the Iraqi General Assembly took place today:
“This day marks a new birth for all Iraqis. It marks the birth of the parliament,” said Ibrahim al-Jaafari, the Shiite politician expected to be Iraq’s next prime minister. Before taking their oaths Wednesday, some two years after the fall of Saddam Hussein, lawmakers had to endure mortar barrages and wailing air raid sirens as insurgents made their presence felt.
[HT to Big Picture.]
Perhaps a good constituent should send this article to Senator Runaway Dayton of Minnesota, infamous for his fleeing Washington during the 2004 election cycle for fear of terrorist attacks on his little office.

Elsewhere in Najaf, hundreds marched in protest of terrorist attacks:
Iraqis march against insurgent violence targeting Shiites in the cities of Hillah and Mosul, during a demonstration in Najaf, Iraq Thursday, March 17, 2005.
Now for a sampling of news from America concerning Iraq:
- As the first General Assembly meets just 46 days after a triumphant people bravely dipped their fingers in purple for freedom the New York Times voices their usual pessimism with Many Iraqis Losing Hope That Politics Will Yield Real Change. They justify it with a street poll taken in the slums of Sadr City while saying, “Nothing like a scientific poll is possible yet in Iraq.”
Wrong — scientific polls have been taken as far back as mid-2003. NYT just won’t admit it because it would invalidate their unscientific sampling. As if it needs invalidating.
- Lefty hero and former senator Sam Nunn is pulling out the tired refrain of lost credibility and international distrust because there weren’t any WMD. Hey Sammy, it was never about the WMD and besides, we know where they are.
- Anti-war activists in San Francisco are preparing to march yet again.
- Floridian Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will pack up 25,000 beanie babies, Teddy Bears, dolls and stuffed animals that were collected for the Orphans of War Campaign in Iraq.
Having started out the post on an optimistic note, I am pleased to include that last item.
