I’m a Capitarian
Believe it or not, a site called OkCupid.com has a pretty darn good political test.
It tells me that I am 61% Social Liberal and 83% Economic Conservative and can be best described as a Capitalist, although if you look at the chart I am a borderline Libertarian (hence the post title “Capitarian”):
I really like the attempt to split up the political spectrum into more than right/left and authoratarian/libertarian, like the traditional political compass which I took in June 2003 (and which, intrestingly enough, I still score at pretty much the same place as I did back then). Although I fail to see how you can fall between Fascist and Totalitarian and still be a Republican, any more than you can fall between Socialist and Totalitarian and still be a Democrat.
Another feature I like is the “who you are like” image, which puts me in some guy’s hair or on Ted Nugent’s neck:
I am, of course, quite proud to be in the same political spectrum as the Nuge. If I ever hit the big lottery I’m gonna get that guy to teach me to hunt. That, and sign my copy of God, Guns & Rock ‘N’ Roll.
One last feature is a chart showing how the nearly 85,000 people who have taken the test voted in the last election. I am ludicrously near the blue area:
Don’t be fooled by the fact that there appears to be more blue dots in the red area than red dots in the blue area. It could just be harder to see the red on blue, but I suspect it’s mostly because two thirds of the people who have taken the test voted for Kerry (66.4%!), showing that there are a lot of geeks who are closet socialists. (Just kidding. Geez, lighten up.)
Anybody recognize which founding father is over there by the unibomber?
Ah well, go take the OK Cupid Politics Test for yourself. Then you can take their death test to see when you’ll meet your maker. I get to live to be 78. Whoopie! Sorry Baby, I’m cancelling the life insurance and buying a Porche!
A few points:
1. The some guy whose hair you are in is The Donald.
2. Fascism is a type of socialism and is in the wrong corner of the chart.
3. The Unabomber is not an anarchist in the political sense, he’s a socialist. He’s a lousy example of anarchism.

I tried to take the quiz, and couldn’t finish it. Like most examples of the type, it has statements that are based on false dilemmas or complex questions, so it’s impossible for me to say whether I agree or disagree with them.
They also make the false conclusion that because I have a certain opinion about a particular issue, that I must necessarily want to enforce that opinion via the government.
I thought fascism was misplaced but am not schooled enough to comment.

I agree with your assesment of tests like this. I think, however, that they are indicative of politcal leanings. It gets me fairly close, although I wish they had a section on Neocon just so I could see how close they think I am. And no matter how I answered, there is no way I should end up in Hillary’s corner!
It also needs to be noted that they’ve put John Kerry’s ugly mug in the exact center. Now, some might like him in the cross-hairs, but not when it means he’s a “centrist.” Kerry’s about as moderate as he is resolute.
This quiz is the best of its kind. I’m pegged as a libertarian.
I thought the quiz was kind of crap-tastic with a lot of leading questions and unrelated clauses. That said, it should surprise no one that I came up 75% social liberal and 18% economic liberal.
