False Fatwa?

As Muslims across France engage in an orgy of destruction, the Union of French Islamic Organizations (France’s biggest Muslim fundamentalist organization) has issued a fatwa (i.e., religious decree) that appears to be aimed at stopping the rioting:

“It is formally forbidden to any Muslim seeking divine grace and satisfaction to participate in any action that blindly hits private or public property or could constitute an attack on someone’s life,” the fatwa said.

“Contributing to such exactions is an illicit act,” declared the edict, which said it was applicable to “any Muslim living in France, whether a citizen or a guest of France.”

A couple of observations about this decree:

  • The issuing organization is a radical group that “espouses an interpretation of Islam close to the Egypt-based Muslim Brotherhood.”
  • Blind destruction is forbidden, but organized war against the French state is not. As I pointed out in my last post, the youths are not acting like rioters but rather exhibit characteristics of organized guerilla warfare.

  • The decree is only applicable to those in France, so rampaging through Denmark is perfectly acceptable. Then again, perhaps there is a fundamentalist organization in Denmark that should take care of that.
